We all want deeper connections
We all want deeper connections. It’s why we network, in part. Sure it’s to get business, but networking goes deeper than that I find. You get to know people over time. You find out a lot more about them than just what they do, or who the ideal clients are. As time goes on you find out details about the person, about their family, their friends, their clients, and other things that have meaning for them. You learn those details and you start to care.
With social media this actually extends even further. Sure you might read about what people had to eat, but you’ll also get to learn a lot of other details about people. At the heart of social media there is this desire for deeper connection as well. People eventually move past the communication and move toward the conversation.
We all want deeper connections, because this is part of the human condition. And that human condition motivates us to connect with other people, to develop technologies such as social media to communicate with other people. Consequently we need to recognize this motivation in our use of social media and in our other methods of communication.
When we recognize that we do want deeper connections then we can be authentic in our communication and work toward developing those deeper relationships. The result is that we surround ourselves with people who we look out for and likewise who look out for us. The best kind of network is a network of mutual support, friendship, and focus. Those relationships occur when we make time to enable them to occur. That can only happen when we are willing to do more than just post the latest news or tell people what we do. We need to let people in, let us all see each other as people and from that build those relationships that create the network I mentioned.
