Some Thoughts on Labor Day

I never liked working for anyone else. The first job I ever had was at Miller’s Country Market. I spent a good amount of the time reading books, instead of working. The Assistant Manager caught me one time and ended up talking with my mom about it, concerned because I didn’t want to work. Who wants to work at age 14? But the truth is I’ve never wanted to work for someone else.

I’ve held a lot of jobs and throughout all of them, one theme came up: I don’t like answering to someone else. I didn’t like having my day scheduled and structured by someone else. And more than anything, I like going my own way and I have my own ideas on how to get things done, and usually it works really well.

I’m self-employed now. I do much better as someone who gets paid for results than someone who gets paid for time. I’m happier than I’ve ever been. So for me labor day is really a day of celebrating doing the work I love doing. It’s about honoring the fact that I’ve chosen to go my own path and realized that what works is being self-employed.

What do you celebrate on labor day?
