The importance of keeping your spirits up during economic rough times

Right now there’s a lot of talk about the economy and how we’re looking at a period of recession. This talk is nothing new. In fact, for most of my life I’ve heard dire predictions and seen lots of people worry fruitlessly over the state of their finances and the economy. I can’t recall a time where the word recession wasn’t used and there wasn’t worry about an economic collapse.

I’ve always felt that it’s important to know how to handle finances and manage money. Right now, I am unemployed. I am running my life coaching business, but I am also looking for a daytime job. It is not an easy time to be looking, especially with the news about the bailout and other economic issues. Yet, despite how things have been going lately, I’m continuing to do my best to keep myself in high spirits. I look at as a simple choice really, as phrased in the excellent movie Shawshank Redemption: “Get Busy libing or get busy dying.”

I’d prefer to get busy living. Yes we live in uncertain times, but when haven’t we lived in uncertain times. The truth is that each and every day has it’s moments of uncertainty. The question that we need to answer is what we choose to do about that uncertainty. Do we let it get to us, or do we find ways to make the situation work for us?

Using myself as an example, I’m learning new programs, doing layout on books, writing articles, and working on growing my life coaching business. I am, of course, also applying for jobs, but most importantly, I’m not letting the situation get to me. It won’t solve any of my problems if I choose to worry about the economy or jobs. It will just make me depressed and cause me to feel like I have no control. Remember that while we can’t control everything around us, we can control our reactions and the choices we make.

So if you’re feeling down about the economy or worried if the next apocalpyse is here, just relax and get busy living. Apply for jobs, but also spend time doing things you like and doing what you can to improve yourself professionally.
