			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I just graduated from the 2011 Clackamas County Leadership Class. I started this class in September of 2010 and for the next 9 months I got to learn a lot about leadership, Clackamas County, the intersection of business with government, community, education, etc., and myself as a leader. I took this class as part of my ongoing commitment to educate and improve myself and what I offer in my business. I&#8217;m glad I did, because it helped me understand how much local business contributes to the well-being of the local economy and community. Here&#8217;s a few key takeaways from my experience:</p>
<p><strong>Leadership in the Community</strong></p>
<p>A community is only as strong as its leaders, and it needs a lot of leaders or at least people who are willing to give of their time toward helping the community. The community, in this case, comprising your local city, schools, chamber of commerce, etc. Leadership in such a community really involves learning where you can help, and what you can do to help other people already involved. There&#8217;s always a team effort in terms of improving a community.</p>
<p><strong>The intersection of Business with the Community</strong></p>
<p>Small, mid, or large business, there&#8217;s always an intersection with the community a business is based out of. And there&#8217;s also an expectation that the business will take an active interest in the community, as well as supporting it. A business that supports the community gives itself some visibility and good pr, which is always useful, but what&#8217;s most important is that people who work at the business recognize they are part of a larger ecosystem than the business itself. By positively contributing to the community they are acting as ambassadors.</p>
<p><strong>How I&#8217;m applying it all</strong></p>
<p>I&#8217;m looking at how I can get more involved in the different communities I&#8217;m part of, while also balancing the time I need to put toward my business, clients, and personal life. I&#8217;ve signed up to join several committees for one of the chambers I&#8217;m part of. I&#8217;m also looking at how I can be a better leader in my industry. And I know I will continue to apply what I&#8217;ve learned in the months to come.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Last Weekend, I attended Mark LeBlanc&#8217;s <a href="http://www.smallbusinesssuccess.com/achievers_home.asp" target="_blank">Achiever&#8217;s Circle</a>, a weekend intensive on business improvement. And what a weekend it was. I learned a lot about my own business that I hadn&#8217;t been fully paying attention to, until I took that course. All of us got a copy of Mark&#8217;s excellent book <a href="http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?lt1=_blank&amp;bc1=000000&amp;IS2=1&amp;bg1=FFFFFF&amp;fc1=000000&amp;lc1=0000FF&amp;t=imagyourreal-20&amp;o=1&amp;p=8&amp;l=as1&amp;m=amazon&amp;f=ifr&amp;md=10FE9736YVPPT7A0FBG2&amp;asins=1931945071" target="_blank">Growing Your Business</a>, which I highly recommend. I&#8217;d already read it and used some of the concepts in it, but this weekend helped me polish my focus.</p>
<p>In fact, what I really came away with was a set of tools and practices I could use to grow my business, provided I could be consistent about it. Now, I&#8217;m already fairly consistent with what I&#8217;d been doing, but the Achiever&#8217;s circle showed me I needed to track my metrics a lot better than I had been and I&#8217;m already putting those tools into place so that I can not only see the income generators, but also determine the order of priority for those income generators.</p>
<p>I&#8217;d highly recommend the achiever&#8217;s circle to anyone. It&#8217;s a weekend that will change your business life and help you get focused and sharp on what you need to. A week after having been through it, and I&#8217;m really seeing changes in a positive direction.</p>

This is an informative book, and it&#8217;s only slightly dated in the sense that Linkedin has updated a few features. However the author also keeps his blog updated with the latest information about Linkedin. This is a useful reference guide for Linkedin.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I took a holiday this last weekend&#8230;a few days away from social media, from running a business, from all the other things I&#8217;ve focused on. I really needed it and when I came back I didn&#8217;t feel like I&#8217;d really missed anything, though I&#8217;ll admit I do feel a little behind on a few projects. But I&#8217;m also ready to work on those projects and don&#8217;t feel burned out. What I learned is that I need to give myself time off. I like what I do, but if I&#8217;m doing it everyday I start to become a technician doing a job, instead of a business owner. So I took a holiday and my business didn&#8217;t crumble around me. It&#8217;s still here and so am I.</p>
<p>On February 11th I&#8217;ll be presenting a 4 hour talk and presentation on <a href="http://www.aliconferences.com/conf/social_media_govt0210/index.htm" target="_blank">social media automation for government</a>. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Earlier this week , I taught for the first time, a webinar on social media marketing. I&#8217;d never used a webinar before so I realized upfront that I needed to plan for that by offering a second date for the class. And while I already knew the material and was comfortable with it, I also knew that because I was presenting it for the first time, it was better to do what I call a dry run, where I&#8217;d simply do the class without putting pressure on myself to record it.</p>
<p>I did get asked by participants if I was going to record the webinar, and as I told them, I&#8217;d record the one on Wednesday, but not Monday. And I was glad I didn&#8217;t record it, because there was one or two technical issues that I had to deal with, which I didn&#8217;t really want recorded. So now, I know these issues, and I&#8217;m more prepared with presenting the class, because I&#8217;ve done it once. Now I can record the class, because I have a better idea of what will happen.</p>
<p>A dry run of a class, basically just doing the class for the sake of seeing what will happen is always essential, in my opinion, for making the class successful. It allows you to see what is working without worrying about what others beyond the attendees will say if they happen to see the information. It can also give you some good perspectives on what to improve for the next time you teach the class. I do a dry run really to help me improve myself.</p>
<p>To be fair, having a recording can be useful also. You can listen or see yourself and from that learn what mistakes you made. Some people will benefit from doing a recording, if they especially want to focus on the talk itself. In this case, because I was dealing with technology, I decided I wanted to go without the recording and focus on making sure I had a good handle on the technology, before taking that next step and recording the talk.</p>
<p>Regardless of what you do, if you&#8217;re going to use something you&#8217;ve recorded for commercial purposes, make sure you only do so after you have done a few trial run and feel comfortable with the product you&#8217;ll be providing to people.</p>

<p>Begins October 30th and ends January 22nd (no class December 25th and January 1st)  We meet Fridays 11:30-1 PST  on the  phone and website. Every class will be recorded, but you can call in from anywhere and access the website from any  place with an internet connection.</p>
