What's your Cause?
This weeks radio interview is with Barbara Saunders from SECP.
What’s Your Cause?
While I spend a lot of time in this newsletter focused on writing articles about businesses and how a business can grow, or about writing and how to build a marketing platform, I also think it’s important to sometimes look beyond the professional and focus on the service aspect, specifically what causes you support.
What is your cause? What is a social, environmental, political, or economic issue you believe in that requires some form of activism and participation, in order to create some changes in the world? Having a cause can help you find some clarity for your life and your goals, because the cause provides you perspective outside of yourself, your clients, your family, and friends. It connects you to an issue that touches or effects more than just the people you know, and may sometimes effect more than just people.
I have a few causes that I believe in and focus on. I believe in contributing time to taking care of the environment, whether it’s planting trees and other plants or pulling out invasive species. I believe in teaching people about economic activism through networking, and how that can be used to promote genuine change and collaboration. And just recently I’ve started researching information about African Elephants, because I want to donate some of my finances to help out elephants.
What’s your cause? What do you believe in? What can you do to support your cause?

Money and you
This week I interviewed Intimacy Coach Angela Wilkinson about what intimacy is and how to achieve it with yourself and other people in your life. Next week I will be interviewing Kare Anderson of Say it Better Coaching.
Money and You
With the economy sliding into a depression, money is obviously one of the biggest concerns on anyone’s mind. Even in the best of times, money is usually a concern, because it is our survival ticket. We pay money for almost everything we acquire. Money is the both the life blood of a business and the life blood of a family. At this time, we can’t really live without it.
Lately I’ve been reading The Analects by Confucius and one of the points he makes is that people will spend three years studying for a salary, but that studying for a salary is not a good reason to study. I agree with his perspective. Doing anything for money ultimately treats money as an end goal and in the process makes it more important than anything else in your life. At the same time, the main purpose of money is forgotten. the main purpose of money is to facilitate a means to an end. In other words, money in and of itself only has value when it is used to secure goals that enrich our lives. If you work all the time and hoard your money, is it really useful? This isn’t to say you shouldn’t save money or have some put aside for hard economic times, like the current ones. But the point Confucius makes is applicable to this time as was in his. Studying with a salary in mind ignores the potential unhappiness you may feel doing that job.
The same is true for business owners. Getting into a business solely to make money is usually an equation that leads to unhappiness. People can tell if you are or are not passionate about what you are doing. And that dictates whether or not they will spend their money.
The relationship you cultivate with money is about attitude. Lots of people have written about how important it is to have a healthy attitude about money and it is important to have that healthy attitude, but part of finding that healthy attitude involves recognizing that money isn’t an end in itself. Study for three years for something you are passionate about and that passion will show up in the quality of work and consequently manifest in the money you earn.
Review: Guerilla Marketing by Jay Conrad Levinson
This is a must have book for anyone who’s starting or running a small business. Levinson includes tons of tactics and strategies that any small business owner can benefit from and best of all can personalize to their own advantages. I have lots of pages dog tagged in my copy, because I know I’ll be referring to them again and again and again. I also like Levinson’s style of writing; he makes readers instantly comfortable with the concepts, while also urging them to incorporate those concepts into how they do business. You can’t go wrong with GuerillaMarketing…what you can learn is how to make your business successful while spending as little as possible.

Cutting Down on the clutter
Cutting Down on the Clutter
During the holiday weekend, my wife got the urge to start de-cluttering the house. She looked around and she told me, she saw lots of stuff. It’s easy to acquire stuff, but once you do, you get cluttered, and she decided a good de-cluttering was needed. Before I knew it, I was also starting to de-clutter some of my own stuff. I picked out books I no longer needed, cleaned out some of my old clothing and otherwise let go of some knick knacks that had no discernible purpose for me. The house felt larger after it was done and I felt less weighed down by stuff.
How about you? Do you feel like your life is cluttered up? Is there anything you are willing to let go of? How would it feel to have a life or a place that doesn’t feel cluttered?

Communication is a pathway to abundance
Each day, in many different ways, we communicate. Sometimes we know we are doing it and other times we might be surprised at what we’re communicating. Communication is about more than word or even body language. It’s also about your emotions and your attitude. If you go into a communication situation with a poor attitude or a scarcity mentality then that is exactly what you will manifest in your situation. The reason for that is because the scarcity mentality is brought into the conversation and all it looks for or manifests is what the person doesn’t have. A person with a scarcity mentality will generally have a negative outlook about life and miss the opportunities that are available or drive them away with the negativity they exude.
Approaching a situation with a positive attitude or abundance mentality will inevitably influence the communication toward producing more abundance. You can tell when a person has an abundance mentality by the way the person acts in a conversation. S/he is asking good questions, is generally upbeat and is somebody you want to be around. This person definitely wants to manifest abundance and doesn’t let anyone get in his or her way.
I believe in the axiom that where the attention goes is where the energy flows. Where you put your attention is where your energy goes. If you put your attention into a scarcity mentality then that is what you get. If you put your attention to an abundance mentality then that is what you will get…Mind you, just having a good attitude won’t cut it. You have to be willing to go out there and look for opportunities and do the work, but if you have an abundance mentality about, you will find that opportunities come to you easier than if you approach a situation with a scarcity mentality.
The saying that you can win more bees with honey then vinegar also applies. What is it you are communicating to people? Are you communicating your scarcity, what you don’t have, or why a situation doesn’t work out, or are you communicating your abundance, appreciating what you have and also being open to letting more manifest into your life?
Remember that how you approach a situation determines what you get out of that situation…will it be abundance or scarcity?

Article: Breaking your projects down with Chunking
In Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), there is a concept called chunking. In chunking, a person takes information and either breaks it down into manageable parts (i.e. focusing on the details, or breaking down the information into smaller pieces so that it makes sense in relation to the big picture), or takes a detail and asks questions to fill in the big picture around that detail. Chunking can be a valuable tool to use when you want to understand the different layers of a project. However, chunking can also be used as a method for organizing how you approach a project.

Article: Wealth and your Attitude
I recently wrote a post about wealth on my personal journal. In it I wrote about various people, places, and other parts of my life that made me feel wealthy. The one thing I didn’t write about was money, not because money isn’t a reality in my life, or even a form of wealth, but because having money in and of itself does not make a person wealthy. It’s what you do with the money that determines the wealth it generates for you. A person can be technically rich, and yet live a miserable life. Is that person wealthy? Not really. The satisfaction a person feels with his or her life is what generates wealth.
Don’t get me wrong though…having a sound financial plan, and good attitudes about money is an important cornerstone of wealth. In fact your attitude, in general, is what really determines the wealth you manifest in your life. If you’re a chronic complainer, always looking at what seems to be going wrong, then no matter how much money you have, you’re still not wealthy. In fact, chances are you’ll end up sabotaging yourself in some manner unless you change those attitudes.
The attitude you apply to your life is a good barometer of what is happening to you internally. If you feel unhappy on a consisten basis, try figuring out what makes you unhappy. By figuring it out and changing it, you can change your situation and your attitude, which in turn can help you start finding other opportunities for happiness and wealth.
The attitude we apply to life determines what we get out of life. If you consistently find yourself looking for the negative in everything, then that’s exactly what you’ll find. Some of the work I do with my clients involves helping them reframe their negative attitudes into positive outcomes, by showing them how they can take a situation that seems to be negative and change the motivation for that negativity into a desire for a positive outcome. Look at your motivations and ask yourself what emotion or desire is fed by that motivation. For instance if you find yourself saying:
I don’t like working at this job because it takes time away from pursuing my art.
Look at how the negative is emphasized over the positive. A solution isn’t offered in the above sentence. But if you reframe that sentence and your way of thinking, you change your attitude and encourage your abundance in life.
I will find work that allows me to pursue my art is a much a better sentence and way of thinking than the previous example.
Next time you find yourself feeling negative, try looking at how you think about and phrase a situation and see if changing that around can help you change your attitude and increase your awareness of opportunities that manifest wealth.

Book Review: Sell the Feeling by Larry Pinci and Phil Glosserman
The authors utilize a story based approach to explain how successful sales works. The story format is a useful way of sharing ideas. At times though it can work against the message of the authors, particularly as they try to sell readers on going to their website. I suppose they might argue that it’s good selling, but at the same time, it also can work against what they really to explain. There’s the occasional little contradiction as well, but overall the explanation behind how sales works, and steps you can improve your sales makes the book worth a read or two. I know it reminded me of some of the skills I have at my disposal that I sometimes forgot I have. The stories and illustrations provide good examples of the principles involved and that can make it helpful for someone trying to learn how to sell.

Introduction
Article: The importance of Believing in the Abundance You Deserve
Book Review: Creativity for Life by Eric Maisel
Upcoming Workshops

Introduction
This weekend I had the opportunity to present my class on breathing easy at the body Mind spirit Expo, in Portland, OR. I had a small group of people show up, but given that I had only registered the class on Tuesday of the week before and it was a 10 A.M., I was really impressed. We had a great time. What I enjoyed the most about the experience was sharing my skills with people who wanted to learn more.
The Importance of Believing in the Abundance You Deserve
On Friday I landed a job. I’d been job hunting for a little while, since my contract at my previous job got finished. While my ultimate goal is to be come self-employed as a life coach, I still need to maintain a viable income while getting more clients. I’ve mostly been focused on building my life coaching business, but I did put aside a few hours each week for job hunting. Yes, only a few hours.
While conventional wisdom argues that you should treat job hunting as a full time occupation, I find it to be too stressful and demoralizing to constantly on what I don’t have. That doesn’t encourage abundance; in fact, it encourages focusing your mental attitudes and beliefs on what you don’t have, on creating a poverty mentality. I know, because last fall that’s what I created for myself when I couldn’t find a job right away and spent a good amount of each day trying to find a job. I kept apply to a job and saying to myself, “Why aren’t they contacting me? Can’t they see I’m the perfect candidate for them?”
So this time, instead of spending lots of time job hunting, I job hunted for a few hours each week. I found jobs I wanted to apply for, applied for them, and then stopped thinking about what I didn’t have, and focused on the abundance I do have in my life: A warm home, food, a loving wife, really good friends, an excellent city to live in, and my life coaching practice. Also every Thursday, I do an abundance ritual where I thank all that is for what it I have and also do a specific affirmation for what I want. Each morning I also do affirmations of what I want to manifest in my life that day. I spent my time doing things to build my coaching practice up as well as enjoying having time to catch up on sleep and enjoy the beautiful day out. I trusted that abundance would come to me if I was willing to invest myself in enjoying what I already had and wouldn’t you know it, that was exactly the case!
If you’re in a situation where you want more wealth and abundance, look at the attitude you’re bringing to the situation. Ask yourself the following questions:
Am I inviting abundance in my life?
Am I thankful for the prosperity and wealth I do have?
Do I feel I deserve the wealth I want?
How do I feel about wealth?
How do I define wealth?
Do I have to work for happiness, or can I enjoy what I already have?
Answering these questions can help you figure out what your attitude toward abundance is. Once you’ve figured that, consider how you can change the attitude (if it’s negative) to a positive attitude, or if it’s a positive attitude, look at your actions and ask yourself how those actions generate wealth in your life. Recognizing how you generate wealth will help you find more ways to generate it. For me, focusing on what I considered really important, getting my life coaching business off the ground and spending time with my wife and friends outweighed worrying about not having a job. Even in a time where the word recession is being uttered a lot, I didn’t focus on what I didn’t have. I remembered what I do have, and focused on the what I wanted to obtain and knew I could obtain. I job hunted for only a couple hours each day and used the rest of the day to learn new skills and keep my spirits high. Now I have a job again, which lets me work at home, and provides me enough time to continue manifesting my life coaching career. If that’s not abundance and wealth I don’t know what is!

Book Review: Creativity for Life by Eric Maisel
The author presents a fairly detailed and good overview of the artistic personality and the challenges that the artist faces, both in terms of internal challenges via the personality of the artist, and career challenges that can also occur for the artist. The author also includes exercises at the end of each section that can the artist can use to help him or herself out by answering some good questions. Additionally creativity coaches can also use the exercises to help clients.
A couple problems I found is that the exercises weren’t really integrated into each chapter. The writing is also fairly dry, which occasionally had me feeling that I was slogging through the book.
Overall, I’d recommend this book as a resource to both creativity coaches and artists who are looking for some understanding and help.

Making Your Financial Attitude Work
Financial management is treated by many as an intimidating task to be dealt with as little as possible. However it doesn’t have to be that way. In this workshop, we explore some common attitudes people have about money and financial attitudes and then I show you techniques and strategies you can use to organize your finances and actually have fun learning about how to make your money work for you, instead of working for it. We’ll explore the role of individual choice and show that individual choice plays a larger role in how you handle finances than the broad economic trends.
