The Importance of Changing Your Mind
I think that one of the hardest actions a business owner can take is changing his/her mind about a project s/he loves or about his/her business. But a successful business owner is never so married to a project or service that s/he can’t change his/her mind about, because s/he knows that sometimes you have to change course in order to move forward.
Until recently I focused on social media. I changed my mind about it because I recognized that while it was certainly a way for me to bring in income, it wasn’t in my best interest to continue down that route. I gave myself permission to change my mind about my business so that I could change it in a different direction.
A business is a lot like a child, in one sense. It’s something you invest in and you have a certain pride about. It’s something you want to believe in no matter what. But sometimes the business needs to change. Those changes may seem detrimental, but that’s usually short term. The long term results can make a business thrive as long as the business owner isn’t so set on having things a specific way.
The business owner needs to be flexible, but also determined to succeed. Changing your mind doesn’t mean you give up on your goals or vision. It means you recognize what doesn’t work and you make changes so you can get back on course and achieve your goals and realize your vision. When you recognize that and understand that the business isn’t the service or product, but your execution of it, then you realize that changing your mind can give you freedom and permission to make changes to your business without feeling like you are letting yourself down.
