The Social Rules of Google Plus

The more time I spend on Google Plus, the more I see a divide among people using it. Some people really get into and love it. And others use it less and less, and wonder if there’s a real purpose to using it. They get frustrated with it.

I like Google plus. And as I spend time on it what I notice is that it’s more focused on sharing information with people commenting on that information than anything else. It’s not like Twitter, but it’s not like Facebook either. I’ll usually share articles from my Sparks, which are the searches I’ve done on Google Plus, and when I do that, I get responses to what I’ve shared.

I do get some responses on regular updates. It helps to add enough content that people will read it and not feel its cloned from Twitter. It also helps if you actively comment on other people’s news and give out some plus ones as well.

I don’t use the Hangout feature much at this point. I feel you have to really be present to use it. I would use it more, if it was more structured and I could define who can come in. At this point, it’s not structured that way and making time to use it can take away from other things I need to do, like running my business.

I like Google Plus…it’s just beginning, but given enough time it will become a lot more dynamic. The seeds are there…just give it some time and attention.
