Social media behavior is becoming popular

Earlier this month I predicted that social media behavior would become a popular topic. And not even two weeks into the year I’ve already seen several other social media personages, Chris Brogan, and Jeremiah Owyang starting to discuss it in their blogs. Why it is becoming so much more popular?

We know the technology is here. And while it’s important to keep up on the technology and the trends on it, it’s also understanding how the tech is used and the ways that people interact with each other using it that also is gaining momentum. Social media behavior is an issue that will continue to gain prominence as people recognize how their behavior influences whether people follow them or comment on their news or otherwise engage with them.

It’s not enough to know the technology. We need to also understand the social norms that influence the use of that technology. Those social norms can and do effect the strategies we develop and the actions we take when using social media. Adopting good behaviors into our strategies and actions can help us optimize the use of social media in reaching out to prospects without coming across as spammy.

As we ask more sophisticated questions about social media the need to continue learning about social media behavior will become more evident and will influence the direction social media studies are taken toward. Yes the technology is here and is important, but finally people are recognizing that the purpose for using the technology is even more important.
