The role of Meaning in Attitude

My Interview with Abigail Doherty of Radiant Animals. This was a fascinating interview about the consciousness of animals, contemporary energy work techniques, and how animals can help us be more aware of our effect on the environment.

****** The role of Meaning in Attitude

Meaning is an important component of attitude. We all have the ability to read meaning into a situation and the meanings we read into a given situation, interaction, person etc., are usually indicative of our attitudes.
When you are dealing with an attitude issue, it can be helpful to step back and look at the meanings you are reading into the situation. For instance if you’re having a bad day at work, you could think there’s more negativity in your exchanges with a co-worker than there actually is. By looking at the meaning you associate with that co-worker, you might then ask yourself, is this the meaning I want to invest into this interaction?
We always have control over the meaning we invest in a situation. It is true that meaning is generally emotionally laden, but it’s also true that we can control those emotions. Meaning is not set in stone, as long as we are willing to examine the meaning and ask ourselves, is this really what I want something to mean.
In business this can also be helpful in looking at your message and presentation. Does what I am doing convey the meaning I want it to convey? Is everyone on the same page when they look at my material? Do I like the meaning I am presenting?
Meaning is an ability all of us have…learning to use it wisely, learning to invest meaning selectively is a skill all of us can learn and it starts when we can step back and acknowledge the meaning we want as well as question the meaning we have.
